1958, 3¢ James Monroe, Purple, United States (Scott #1105)

SKU 1105
Price

$20.00

This stamp was issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. The design is based on a portrait of Monroe by the renowned artist Rembrandt Peale. It was officially released on April 28, 1958, in Montross, Virginia, near Monroe's birthplace.

This is a genuine specimen of the 1958 commemorative issue. Scott #1105 is a widely collected stamp with a total printing of approximately 118 million copies. Due to the heavy machine cancellation and the noticeable wear on the perforations, this particular copy holds standard historical and philatelic interest rather than a premium market value.

Technical Specifications:

  • Catalog Number: Scott #1105.

  • Denomination: 3 Cents (3¢).

  • Release Date: April 28, 1958.

  • Printing Method: Rotary Press.

  • Perforation: 11 x 10½.

  • Color: Purple.

  • Subject: 200th Anniversary of the birth of James Monroe.

Condition Analysis:

  • Status: Used. The stamp features a heavy black ink machine cancellation that partially obscures the portrait and the "Postage" inscription.

  • Centering: Fine (F). The design is noticeably shifted toward the top-right corner. The bottom and left margins are significantly wider than the top and right margins.

  • Reverse Side: The gum is absent, which is standard for a used specimen. The back shows light paper toning and minor remnants of paper/hinge material, consistent with age and previous mounting.

  • Perforations: Generally intact, but there is evident wear on the bottom and right edges, including several "short" or "shaggy" teeth, likely caused during the separation of the stamp from the sheet.
